“Returning to my roots to inspire others” - one practitioner’s journey into Early Years

✍️ For Victoria Cockram, one of our workforce improvement advisors, what began as a college course has led to a rich and varied journey through the sector. From working in nurseries, to supporting the next generation of practitioners, hear how her passion for helping others has shaped a fulfilling career.

Inspiring the Next Generation

“My role today allows me to connect with young people and adults who are thinking about working in early years.

“I get to attend school career events, run workshops and talk to community groups to raise awareness about the many opportunities the sector has to offer.”

Why lifelong learning matters

“I started with a Level 3 course, then moved into a nursery role where I quickly progressed. I went on to open a purpose-built nursery and later became an assessor and lecturer.”

“Eventually, I completed a degree in early years and took on senior roles in education before returning to her roots to inspire others.

“Every qualification and course helped me grow, - not just professionally, but in the way I could support children to thrive.”

Working in early years is more than just a job – it’s a career that offers laughter, learning and chance to make a real impact in children’s lives.

“One of the biggest advantages of working in early years is flexibility.

“There are so many options- childminding from home, working in holiday schemes. You can work part-time, full-time, term-time only – whatever suits your life. And as your confidence grows, there are always ways to progress.”
