Collecting and using your information

We use personal and sometimes sensitive (special) information to carry out our duties and deliver services.

We decide why, what and how information is processed and ensure safeguards are in place for the personal and special information we use. This means we are a ‘Data Controller’.

We’re required by Data Protection law to register as a ‘data controller’ with the Information Commissioners Office (ICO). Our registration can be viewed on the ICO website. Our registration number is Z5653111.

We’re also required to have a Data Protection Officer.

The Council is empowered to deliver a range of services and undertake a number of public tasks.

We’ll use your data to:

  • provide, plan and manage council services
  • carry out our regulatory, licensing and enforcement roles
  • carry out any other tasks which we have to do by law
  • make and take payments and grants and spot fraud
  • listen to your ideas about council services
  • tell you about council services.

Where a service is provided by a third party we’ll have to share some of your information with the provider. If this is the case we’ll ensure that your information is still protected.

Joined-up services within the council

We share your data between departments and services within the council so that we can keep our information up-to-date, provide cross departmental support, and to improve our services to you. Corporate Resources and the Chief Executives Department provide support and specialist services across the council and may need access to personal information to do so. Staff can only see your information if they need it to do their job.
