Autism - where to start

Support and advice available about Autism in Leicestershire.

What is Autism?

Autism is a lifelong, developmental disorder that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, and how they experience the world around them. Autism is a spectrum condition meaning that it affects people in different ways. 2/3rds of people born with Autism do not have additional learning difficulties.

People with autism are impacted to differing degrees but all will experience difference in the areas of: social interaction, processing information, sensory processing and communication. This means that they may have challenges in understanding the world in the way others do. Some children may need specialist provision while others will do well in mainstream education.

People with autism can still make friends, go to college, gain employment and do other things just like their peers. They might need extra support along the way but are still able to lead happy and fulfilled lives.
