Historic Environment Record

The Historic Environment Record (HER) is the most complete record of archaeological remains and historic buildings in Leicestershire and Rutland. It covers from prehistoric times to the present day.

Using the Historic Environment Record

Commercial enquiries

  • we usually perform 500m or 1km radius searches
  • we aim to complete searches within 5 working days
  • information can be provided either digitally or on paper

Complete the online commercial HER enquiries request form - no payment is required at this stage.

Charges:

  • remote searches – first hour or part of: £150 + VAT
  • remote searches – subsequent hour or part of: £100 + VAT
  • half day desk charge for visiting us at County Hall: £60 + VAT
  • full day desk charge for visiting us at County Hall: £120 + VAT

Desk charge includes assistance from the HER Officer and all reasonable photocopying and scanning.

Non-commercial enquiries

There’s no charge for non-commercial enquiries, get in touch with us and we’ll try to help.

We’re currently working on making our HER records available online through the Heritage Gateway.

Please note that data from the Heritage Gateway cannot be used for commercial purposes.

Adding to the Historic Environment Record

If you’re involved in local archaeology please send us copies of any of your reports. Once received, we try to add information to the HER as quickly as possible.
