Council working hard to reopen waste sites

The council has launched a recruitment drive to fill more than 50 vacancies in its highways, transport and waste management teams.

Officials are working hard to overcome significant staff shortages that have forced some Leicestershire County Council recycling and household waste sites to close in recent months.

The Bottesford and Somerby recycling and household waste sites are currently closed because not enough staff members are available to run them.

The recent issues have been caused by the coronavirus pandemic and a national shortage of lorry drivers.

The site at Shepshed is temporarily open for three days a week and Market Harborough is open for seven days. The council has launched a recruitment drive to fill more than 50 vacancies in its highways, transport and waste management teams and there will be a recruitment event at County Hall in Glenfield between 11am-4pm on Thursday March 3.

While we are doing everything we possibly can to make sure our waste sites are open, staffing numbers and external factors may mean there is disruption to our services.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your cooperation during this time. We are continuing to monitor the situation very closely and we will update residents as soon as we able to do so.

We would encourage residents to visit our website for the latest updates before they travel.

Residents who wish to use a household waste site, can visit one of eleven recycling centres - Barwell, Coalville, Lount, Loughborough, Lutterworth, Market Harborough, Melton, Mountsorrel, Oadby, Shepshed and Whetstone – which remain open and operating. The Kibworth site is also closed for pre-planned redevelopment work.
