A pioneering scheme helping shape the future of food across Leicestershire is bidding for a gold award.
Good Food Leicestershire, led by Leicestershire County Council, brings together 75 organisations to support local growing, encourage ‘farm to fork’ approaches and back community food projects.
By tackling food poverty, and championing sustainable local food systems, it aims to improve access to healthy food, making nutritious, affordable and locally produced food the norm across Leicestershire.
Now Leicestershire is setting its sights on the highest ‘gold’ accolade in the Sustainable Food Places Awards after securing silver in late 2023.
Community Harvest Whetstone (CHW) is an example of the scheme in action, providing great value veg and recipes.
“People buy a share of a future harvest and this enables us to access the land, buy the seed and to employ growers to grow the fruit and veg. Then people get their share every week, throughout the whole year. It’s a good way to scale community growing and makes more efficient use of land and resources.
“The best thing about it is that people can be actively engaged in how their food is grown, and they realise that it is possible to feed people in a way which takes into account the health of the soil and biodiversity too."
Hannah Watkins from CHW
“Leicestershire has always been proud of its farming roots and rural food traditions. From farmland to bustling food markets, Leicestershire has long been known for its outstanding food production.
“Striving for gold standard is a natural next step to recognise the dedication of so many people and organisations.
“It’s not just a badge. From planning and policy to public health and community support, it’s about embedding good food into every part of life.”
Councillor Michael Squires, cabinet member for health
