Find out about getting copy certificates for births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships.
Where the birth, death, marriage or civil partnership took place
We can only issue copy certificates for births, marriages or deaths that took place in the county of Leicestershire (not Leicester City).
For events that took place within Leicester City, e.g. births in Leicester Royal Infirmary, Glenfield Hospital and Leicester General Hospital, you’ll need to contact the City of Leicester Register Office.
Requesting a certificate
You can order certificates online. Before you begin, please read the following information:
Put in a surname (a mandatory field), leave out the forename, choose a year range which includes the date you suspect may be correct, click all sub-districts and see what results are produced. If there are too many results and you are unsure of the correct one, refine your search by choosing a sub-district and a forename.
If you are unable to supply precise information then it may take longer for us to locate the entry to which you are referring. Please complete the manual certificate application form with all the information you have. In some cases we may not be able to determine the actual entry.
If you are uncertain of the date of an event we will search for a five-year period (2 years either side of your suggested date (e.g. you suggest 1885, we will search 1883 to 1887) but unfortunately, we do not have the resources for extensive searches of the indexes.
If you can't find the certificate in the online search, submit your request using our Manual certificate request form. If the record is available the registration team will contact you with instructions to place your order and pay online.
If the record is not held by Leicestershire, the team will give instructions as to where it can be found and no fee will be taken. The researching family history page has more information on the birth and death registers we hold.
A copy certificate costs £11, plus a supplement for special delivery and / or overseas postage.
Both full and short birth certificates cost £11. The short certificate is not usually accepted by banks or the Passport Office.
Allow 3 to 5 working days from us receiving your request to processing your order. An express service is available including a pay and wait service by appointment. Please call 0116 305 6565 for more details.
