Have your say on plans to create new school places in Leicestershire

Help shape the future of schools

Secondary school children

People can help shape the future of education in Leicestershire by sharing their views on plans to create thousands of new school places.

With new housing developments, rising pupil numbers and more families choosing county schools, Leicestershire County Council is asking for feedback on its updated School Places Strategy for 2026–2031.

A mix of new schools and expansions of existing schools are proposed to help provide places for an anticipated increase of more than 26,000 pupils in the county by 2036.

Key proposals include:

  • Building new primary and secondary schools in areas of large housing growth across Leicestershire
  • Improving access to special educational needs (SEN) provision through new and expanded provisions
  • Expanding existing schools where needed to meet local need
  • Reorganising schools where this is needed to ensure sustainable schools which serve their local communities for the future
  • Working closely with academy trusts to deliver high-quality provision in the right place and at the right time.
  • Using data and forecasts to strategically plan school places and ensure every child has access to a good school

Councillor Charles Pugsley, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, said: “We are proud of our schools and want to make sure they continue to meet the needs of our growing communities.

“With new housing developments and rising pupil numbers, it’s vital we plan ahead to ensure every child has access to a good local school. We need your views to help us get it right.”

The consultation will close on 4 January, 2026. To have your say, visit the Have Your Say Page.
