Who can register a birth

Married parents

Either parent can register the birth if you were married at the time of conception or when your child is born.

Unmarried parents

As unmarried parents, there are 3 ways to get both your details on the birth certificate:

  • sign the register together

If one of you can’t attend:

If the mother isn’t married to the child’s father she can choose to register the birth on her own. The father’s details won’t be added to the certificate.

If the father’s details are not recorded on the birth register, it may be possible to add them at a later date by re-registering the birth.

If none of the above applies to your situation, please contact our Registration service who’ll be able to help you.

Other people who can register a birth

If the child’s parents can’t register the birth, one of the following people may be able to:

  • a member of staff from the hospital where the child was born
  • someone who was present at the birth
  • someone who is responsible for the child
