Around 20,000 Leicestershire school children and families in most need are receiving vital help with food and energy costs as the cold weather kicks in.

This month, Leicestershire County Council has opened up its Government-funded £6.38m Household Support Fund.

Over 2,000 people have applied so far for the scheme, enabling households to apply for an average of £200 to help pay for essentials.

Children eligible for free school meals will also receive through their school £30 food vouchers for the Christmas holidays.

“Children’s health and development is vital and I’m pleased we’re supporting those who are struggling to make ends meet.

“Making sure our children and young people are healthy is key. Although we’re disappointed that the Government cut this year’s grant without explanation, it helps us to make sure families who need a helping hand with essential food and fuel costs get the support they need.

“Cost of living remains high and I’d encourage anyone who’s struggling to afford the basics to find out more on our website.”

Applications for support with food or fuel need to be made through a professional or support worker – more information can be found on the cost of living section of the website.
