Green Plaque with name of Alice Young on it

The successful green plaques awards scheme celebrates and commemorates the county's past and, from a shortlist of 12, the following six people and places have been chosen:

  • Chapel Street, site of the meteorite discovery, Barwell;
  • William Cotton, inventor of patent knitting machines, Loughborough;
  • Lady Florence Dixie, author/women's rights campaigner, Market Bosworth;
  • The Palitoy toy factory, Coalville;
  • Sir Frank Whittle, inventor of the jet engine, Lutterworth;
  • Wicklow Lodge, First World War military hospital,  Melton;

We received a record number of votes and I want to thank everyone who took the time to get behind their favourite and support the scheme. We'll now work hard to get these next six plaques installed as we continue to celebrate the people and places of Leicestershire’s rich history.

The selection of the six successful recipients does not mean it's the end of the road for the other nominees. They can put forward their selections again next year.

The green plaque awards scheme was set up by council leader Nick Rushton to recognise and celebrate people and places which have made an important and enduring contribution to the county.
