About adult social care

It's an exciting time to join our growing team and help us achieve our long-term vision for adult social care in Leicestershire.

We are recruiting for a number of roles, and we need people who care about others to apply.

A career in social care can be challenging, but extremely rewarding as well. At Leicestershire County Council, we are committed to helping you achieve your career goals and will provide you with training opportunities, so that you can learn and progress.

Come and join us and you will meet incredible people, work with incredible people, and make a difference to people’s lives in Leicestershire – including your own!

We provide a range of care and support services that make a difference to people’s lives.

Our focus is to improve the lives of vulnerable people and their families. We are committed to helping people do everyday things and be active in their community, and safeguarding them from harm, as well as promoting, maintaining, and enhancing their independence, so they are healthier, stronger, and more resilient. We support people including unpaid carers who need practical or emotional support to lead an active life.

We aim to deliver services which will enable people to gain or regain skills to help them to live independently and recover from illness, as well as promoting healthier lifestyles.

As much as possible, we make sure that the support we give is unobtrusive and least restrictive, which means that we will help people in the short term, but we also hope that people will be able to support themselves in the long term.

Starting your career

Some adult social care jobs, such as Home Care Assistant and Customer Service Centre roles, may not require specific qualifications or previous work experience. They offer on-the-job training to help you develop your skills and your confidence while you are at work.

Working with people who need care and support may not require specific qualifications, the right values and attitude are a great start!

Progressing your career

It doesn’t necessarily matter how you started your career in care or where you are in your career path, there are opportunities to develop and progress at Leicestershire County Council.

Our staff have moved up into jobs with more responsibility and continued to learn new skills and gain qualifications, while others have chosen to move to different types of jobs within the council.

There are ongoing training opportunities to learn and progress your career with us.

Returning to a career in adult social care

Your experience and skills are invaluable to us, and we can help make your return to adult social care straight forward.

Though the equipment, technology and ways of working may have changed since you last worked in adult social care, there is still a sense of camaraderie and a desire to help people live fulfilling lives.

Most of our roles offer flexible working patterns and there are always opportunities to develop and progress.

If you have been away from social care for a long time, you may need to update your knowledge and skills to return to your chosen role, and we can support you along the way.

Switching to a career in adult social care

Even if you have not worked in the care sector before, you may have transferable skills that would make you an exceptional care worker.

These skills could be what you have learnt working in other sectors and in everyday life such as being organised and reliable, the ability to think on your feet, be a good listener and compassionate.

We have many staff who have switched from working in other sectors including retail and hospitality.

We offer training to help you develop your skills and your confidence while you are at work.

All you need are the right values and attitude towards working with people who need care and support.
